New Member of the Week: Stephen Lloyd

Hello Fellow Creatives,

I have another member of the week for you! I’m happy to introduce Stephen Lloyd. He is a new Zooppa member that just won 1st place in the Budweiser contest for his King Me print! Please help me congratulate him!

Stephen is an accomplished graphic designer from the Seattle who has worked for huge companies such as Microsoft and has recently made the move to Portland to work as a brand designer for NIKE. Yet another reason to congratulate him! Read on to learn more:

Tell us about yourself.

I began my graphic design career in high school doing artwork for local and touring bands who came through Seattle. After graduating from the Art Institute of Seattle, I was hired as the Graphic Design Lead at a record label. Since then, I have co-founded a successful apparel company, worked as a graphic designer at world-renown ad agency, and was the main graphic designer on Microsoft’s Worldwide Retail Services team. I was just recently hired as a Brand Designer at NIKE, Inc. in Beaverton, OR where I am currently creating the brand and identity for an entirely new global division which will be launched later on this fall.

Who is your favorite director and what is one of your all time favorite movies?

My favorite director is Tim Heidecker, but my favorite all-time movie is definitely Hook.

If you had an unlimited budget, where would be your dream location to shoot?

I’m assuming “shoot” is referring to photography haha. Um, I would probably choose the International Space Station just so I can put that in my resume.

Share with us your creative process. What have you found inspiring?

It’s different with every project. If I’m designing album artwork for a band or artist, I’ll usually get inspired by just listening to their record on repeat until something clicks and the design represents their sound. At Nike, it’s a very collaborative process where some of the brightest minds in the world help with input and insight. Their campus is amazing and really nurtures the creative process in all aspects. I really have to be immersed in a creative atmosphere to do my best work. A good cup of coffee helps as well.

Which was your favorite contest to participate in? Why?

The Budweiser campaign was by far my favorite because the idea came to me instantly and the execution went really smoothly. I’m surprised everything came out as well as it did.

How did you come up with the idea for (your winning contest) and what was the process in creating the print?

The guidelines were pretty open and they just said to have it relate to their phrase “The King of Beers.” I did a quick Google search of “King” and “Regal” to find tangible expressions of royalty. I got a lot of crowns, lions, the color purple, etc but the one thing that stood out was the king chess piece. Then the phrase “King me.” just popped in my head and I ran with it. I created the checkerboard and beer glass from scratch in Cinema 4D, added Budweiser’s image of the bottle that they supplied, added the foam crown logo in Photoshop and voila! The whole thing probably took about 2 hours to do.

What are you hoping to achieve in the future?

I just want to be the best possible designer I can be down here in Oregon for the time being. I’d like to eventually move back to Seattle and get my Doctorate in Digital Design and Experimental Media at UW and then open up my own firm with 3 or 4 other designers.
