Tell us about yourself, personally and creatively.

Ciao, I am Maurizio, an italian filmmaker. I deal with visual communication and productions living in the beautiful island of Sicily, between the water of Mediterranean sea and the fire of Etna volcano. I think to be a normal guy that, as many others, one day of childhood understood a need to express, through a frame, his emotions and the wish to tell stories. And now, after so many years, that kind of whim became my free-lance profession. It’s not easy here, but I feel lucky the same.

What brought you to the Zooppa community?

It was some years ago. I was surfing the web looking for some creative contest to get involved, but I found more: a whole community of people like me with which to confront and learn.

What do you like most about crowdsourced illustration contests?

The constructive dialogue. Real brands, professional brief and many film makers that are put into play, often with brilliant ideas rather than with professional equipment. As I told before, there’s always a lot to learn from each other.

Name 3 films/directors that have influenced your work.

Steven Spielberg, Federico Fellini, Sofia Coppola.

Where do/did you go to school? How has your education influenced your illustrations?

I have a basic scientific education, because I attended scientific course in high school. It wasn’t bad, it developed in me a rational side that I hadn’t. Then I studied communication. But the love for filmmaking I found when I was 10 y.o. and it never let me.

What is your favorite genre of film to create?

I always try to tell stories, also for the short videos. I haven’t a favorite genre, but I try to add a pinch of irony and emotions in all my works.

Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon?

Probably resting, or working, on the beach.

Choose 5 words to describe your art.

Simple, honest, dreamy, positive, independent.

What projects are you currently working on?

I recently made videos for De Longhi and Abarth contests. Now I am preparing a commercial for a company of my city and some other works. Meanwhile, looking around for new interesting Zooppa contests.

What drew you to participate in this campaign? i.e. – did the brief catch your attention, the prize money, the love for the brand?

Generally, I am particularly interested in Canon contests because they are challenging and offers enough freedom of creativity. In this case, my attention was caught by the topic: to talk about winter while around me was 38°C (100°F). It was funny.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your fellow Zooppa community members?

I have just to learn from the community, but I could suggest to beginners to focus on ideas: a good idea can fill any technical or experience gap.

10 years from now where will we see you and your films?

At Superbowl with some ad? :) I sincerely hope on the screen of a cinema: it could be the best satisfaction of my life!
