Tell us about yourself, personally and creatively.
Originally from Beijing, China, I’m a director working and living in Los Angeles, California. Most time I’m a quiet and reserved person, but could get really hyper and loud when doing things I love. I studied classical music for about 15 years since I was 4. Good music is always an important component and inspiration of my creative work.
What first interested you in film?
Although I’m from a Chinese family, my dad always loved watching American especially Hollywood movies and talking about them. He bought like 10 DVDs every week. That played a big part.
What drew you to the Zooppa community?
I’ve always interested in the world of advertising because it’s fun to see the artists’ creativity serving others. Zooppa provides a great platform for me to browse and find the most suitable client(s) to work with.
What do you like most about crowdsourced film contests?
The much bigger freedom to create and the not-so-slim chance to win.
What do you like to do when you’re not creating video masterpieces?
Reading, discovering restaurants, practicing a new song on guitar.
Where is home for you?
It used to be Beijing where I was born and raised. It still is, but having lived in LA for almost 5 years, LA is now my second home.
Where do/did you go to school? How has your education influenced your filmmaking?
I graduated from USC School of Cinematic Arts last year. I loved my years there because I met some of the best filmmakers and greatest people from all over the world. They are inspirational to me.
What/where do you find inspiration for your films? Share a bit about your creative process.
A lot is from watching other people’s work, not only films but also drawings, installations, shows, etc. “Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal.” True that.
Which was your favorite Zooppa contest to participate in? Why?
The Kikkoman Teriyaki Marinade project. It was such a fun idea to create a song to express the content. I’m a big foodie too- Filming yummy food is just intuitive and perfect for me. Plus I actually do cook and eat with Kikkoman products and love the taste a lot.
What are you currently working on (job, films)?
Preparing for a commercial shoot In November for my favorite ice-cream brand, also a few other commercials for local businesses of my friends.
What are you hoping to achieve in the future?
Inner peace and happiness, generally speaking.
