Time to head north of the border to meet our newest Zooppa Member of the Week, Kiel Chenier! A prize winner in the D&D Next Playtest contest here on Zooppa. Filmmaker and animator extraordinaire, this fellow has got what it takes to make him way in his creative endeavors and we’re pleased as punch to have him as a member of our creative community.

Zooppa: Quick! Who are you?
Kiel: I’m an independent filmmaker, illustrator, and writer from Toronto, Ontario.
Zooppa: What’s your filmmaking background?
Kiel: I went to Humber College for Film & Television Production in 2008. I wrote and produced an award winning short documentary (To Romero With Love), and directed a short sci-fi drama (Preservation). I was hired on full time with Toronto based studio 567vfx as a Tape Operator in 2010. Currently I’m developing my skills in animation and producing content for a Dungeons & Dragons-centric tumblr, “Dungeons & Donuts“.
Zooppa: What’s your favorite project that you have worked on?
Kiel: My favourite project thus far has been the “D&D Encounters” webseries I produced for YouTube. It allowed me to improve my digital editing skills and promote a game that I was passionate about. I was able to work with a number of fun individuals and allow their personalities to shine through in a documentary setting. Most of all, it gave me the opportunity to try and present the game in a new light; one less focussed on its existing client-base, and instead on drawing in a new audience who may not have been familiar with D&D otherwise.
Zooppa: And your favorite Zooppa project?
Kiel: While I’m very proud of the “Your Game. Your Way” ad I made for Zooppa, my favourite submission is “Any way you want!” from the same contest. It was a fun concept that allowed me to use a bunch of techniques I was new to: pixel art, digital illustration, and stop frame animation. The final product is a bit rough around the edges, but for a first time endeavour, it was a great experience.
Zooppa: Any tips for aspiring video contest winners?
Kiel: As a contest winner, I placed 8th out of a total of eight prize slots. The submissions that placed above me were very much in line with what parent company Wizards of the Coast has done previously with their marketing of D&D (ie, trading on in–game knowledge, a familiarity of the existing product, and appealing to the niche sense of humour and sensibilities of an existing fanbase). My only suggestion to others would be to be as familiar with the contest’s supporting company’s existing marketing identity and strategy as possible.
