Today’s Zooppa Profile comes to us from 5197.91 Miles (8365 Kilometers) away! For those of you who are curious, that’s the distance between Zooppa HQ in Seattle, Washington, and our Zooppa winner Ekaterina in Moscow, Russia!
Ekaterina’s winning video, ‘There is a Solution’, took second place, and for good reason. Her use of storytelling is not only informative but also humorous. She is a brilliant young filmmaker, and I can’t wait to see what she makes next! Check out her winning video below!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Ekaterina Moskvina and I live in Moscow, Russia. I am currently studying at the TV and Radio Broadcasting University in the Film & TV department. I like to shoot commercials, music clips and motion pictures. I have just some short films but I’m going to shoot full-length films for the big screen.
And how about a little of your film making experience?
I had my first big project when I was in 11th grade. I shot a documentary film about the asteroid Apophis. I decided to use a green screen and show cosmic footage so that the viewer wouldn’t get bored. It was my first experience with chromakey shooting. I took first place among schools.
What’s your favorite project you’ve ever worked on?
I filmed a project called “Dilemma”, in the winter, it was very cold. You can watch this video on my Vimeo channel. We used Patriarshiye Pond in Moscow as our location (like in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita”). We only had three crew members on this project. I was the director, and actress, we had a cinematographer, and one supporting actor. We shot in the park outside for three hours, so I made sure to dress warm so I didn’t freeze! My cinematographer actually got frostbite on his fingers from being out in the cold for three hours. I received excellent marks for my film, so, thankfully we didn’t have to reshoot any footage!
As a contest winner, do you have any tips for other filmmakers trying to score their first win?
You always need to create work from the heart. Don’t copy the concepts and works of others. Just make your own story.
What’s your favorite submission to Zooppa?
To create my commercial, I looked for workout videos, and came across Calisthenics Kingz founder, Hit Richards. He is a very interesting person. I got enormous pleasure shooting for the MHL contest. I filmed in my room and shot the video with my soap box camera. It was very funny. I had to do many takes, especially the scene where I fell off the bed.
