Filmmaking Tips for Comedic Commercials

Humor is a powerful tool for commercials. It helps your audience instantly connect with your message. But making something funny is harder than it seems.

Get your point across without offending or being ignored in 3 easy steps.

Know Your Market

A sense of humor is kind of like a snowflake. They’re all cold and white, but no two are identical. What might be funny to you might be offensive, dumb, or overly intellectual to others.

To understand what a company is looking for, look at their other advertising. Who does it appeal to? Your work won’t exist in a vacuum. It should appeal to their same target market, or else it will feel “wrong” to both the client and the viewer. Do your research!

Make Sure The Message is Clear

Wouldn’t it be great if all advertisements never told you the product they were advertising, they were just full of crazy jokes and situations?

The answer is no.

Humor can make any advert memorable, but when it’s unclear what you’re actually advertising, your perfect punchline won’t matter. An unclear ad will never go mainstream, except as an example of what not to do.

Is My Advertisement Funny?

Now after you’ve done all this prep for the advert, you may start to wonder if the joke you’re wanted to tell is even funny. The best way to test that is to get feedback.

Share you advertisement idea with others [friends or people who the product is marketed towards] and the response given should tell you whether or not it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

Don’t feel discouraged if at first you don’t succeed. Comedy is all about going out on a limb and trying new things.
