We here at Zooppa were really entertained by all of the videos submitted to the Cold Shower Challenge. One video really stood out to us because of its originality and hilarity. Although he didn’t win for his video, The Cold Task, we really wanted to talk to Destin777 and see what he’s about.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Destin Dern, I am 21 years old. I love making videos with my friends, most of our videos can be found here. I try to make most of my videos funny as well as strange. Some of my influences and favorite films would be anything by: David Lynch, Gregg Araki, and Quentin Tarantino.
How did your film-making translate into ZOOPPA competitions?
When I looked over the Zooppa site, I was very impressed with the layout of the site and how much creativity I had in the contest that I entered. After viewing a few of the submissions already posted I thought I would have a good chance at placing. I have been directing, writing, filming, and editing short films and commercials with my friends for a while so I thought my skill level was perfect for this contest.
Explain your video to us and what inspired you to make the video?
My video is called The Cold Task. It shows a someone taking a hot shower (me) and thinking about good times hanging out with his friend (Jeremy DeMoss) who is driving the car, when the shower starts to turn cold, so does the car ride eventually leading to a car crash. When the scene ends we find the two main characters sitting on the couch talking about how the previous scene was a commercial they made for the Fast Water Heater Company contest. They wonder if they will like the commercial or not and decide to go and ask “The Master” (Scott Yuken) the master is displeased with the video and decides to punish them by giving them both a cold shower!
I got inspired to make the video after looking at the contests tag line on the front page, It said “Hot enough? Funny enough? weird enough?”. After seeing this I said to my self, I don’t know if I can make the video “Hot” but I can definitely give them weird and funny since that’s what I assumed they were looking for. I thought right then of a way to symbolize a cold shower, A car crash. Who doesnt like seeing car crashes? That’s definitely a cold shower! And the whole part of the master, my friend Scott Yuken helped me come up with that. We used a similar character to “the master” in another video we made a few months before.
How would you describe the experience of shooting and uploading a video to Zooppa?
My experience shooting the film was great. My friends and I had a lot of fun writing and filming the video. We filmed it the whole thing in about 5 to 6 hours. After the filming was completed I spent about 8 to 10 hours total editing the video. We put in a lot of work making the video and although we did not place in the contest, we had a lot of fun making the video for the contest so it was definitely worth it.
What attracted you to enter the Cold Shower Contest through ZOOPPA?
The whole theme and example videos attracted me to enter. I thought the theme was creative and gave me a lot of freedom to come up with my own ideas for the contest while still sticking to the cold shower theme. Another thing that attracted me was the nice cash prize. If my friends and I won we were going to spend most of the money on tools to make future videos from us better, we would have gotten things like a new green screen, better lighting, and a better mic for sound.
Thanks Destin, watching your video was a pleasure to watch. We can tell you’re having fun out there and we hope you enter more contests in the future!
Take it easy,
