Today, I’m interviewing elangley, winner of The Week 10th Anniversary Video Contest.
Congrats on winning. I see that you’ve been around on Zooppa much longer than I. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I grew up in Massachusetts and have been living in San Francisco for the past 10 years. I work as a Manager at a local animation studio, despite having studied Pre-Med in college. I discovered filmmaking towards the end of my college career and have explored it as a hobby ever since.
How did your film-making translate into ZOOPPA competitions?
It translated two fold. First off, I’ve always been a competitive person. So, naturally, I like that these contests allow me to compete against other filmmakers. Secondly, all filmmakers know that the process is extremely iterative. If left up to us, our projects would never be complete. The ZOOPPA competitions act as a forcing mechanism to make me actually finish something, whether I’m happy with the final product or not. I find that extremely valuable, b/c it allows me to walk through the entire process from beginning to end, complete the piece, learn from my mistakes and then do it all over again.
Explain your video to us and what inspired you to make the video?
I created a live action, stop motion video for this competition. I had been itching to try a stop motion video, but never had an idea that I was excited enough about. When I read the brief for the week, I had stop motion on the brain so I started thinking how I could incorporate it into a video for The Week. After a few hours of brainstorming, I came up with the idea that eventually became the final product.
How would you describe the experience of shooting and uploading a video to zooppa?
It’s been a great experience for me so far. Like I said before, I love the fact that it forces me to be creative and churn out a final product whether it’s ready or not. After uploading, it’s so much fun to check the blog and see everyone get so excited about the upcoming award announcements. I never expected to win, so I was floored when I saw my name at the top of the list.
What attracted you to enter the Week Contest through ZOOPPA?
I’ve entered a handful of ZOOPPA competitions since my first, which was around this same time last year. I’m always checking the site to see which competitions inspire me to make a video. I really liked what The Week contest was asking for, so I decided to explore some ideas and give it a go.
How did you find out about Zooppa and what made you stick around for as long as you have?
I found out about ZOOPPA from literally searching “filmmaking competitions” online. As soon as I checked out the site and took part in my first competition, I was hooked. I’ve stuck around b/c it’s a well-run site that gives members a number of contest options to choose from. I’ve heard that there are other sites like ZOOPPA out there somewhere, but I’ve never had a reason to look into any of them b/c ZOOPPA has satisfied all of my needs.
Are there any other Zooppers whose work you enjoy?
I really enjoyed JohnBrookbank’s video for the Silk competition.
Thanks elangley. Keep the videos coming.
Take it easy,
