Meet our newest featured member, Landon Donoho! Landon is a filmmaker living in Atlanta, Georgia and a graduate from the Savannah College of Art & Design. He loves all things that revolve around film and storytelling, and his recent submission was our Early Entry Winner for the Philips-Disney Bring a Child’s Imagination to Life campaign!
When I was a kid, I wanted to be an author and illustrator. I’ve always loved storytelling and wanted to be a part of it. As I grew up, I discovered photography, music, theater, and all the other mediums. Film and game design seems to be the youngest of the arts, and the ones that get to use all the other mediums within itself. I think that’s pretty awesome, so that’s where I’m spending my time and energy.
What drew you to the Zooppa community?
I heard about ad contests from a friend about a year ago. I decided to give them a try, and Zooppa was the platform I picked to try them with. I had a great first experience, and many wonderful experiences to follow.
What do you like most about crowdsourced film contests?
The film and television industry has a history of being hard to break into. For the longest time, it wasn’t about how good you were or what ideas you had as much as how much time you spend in the business. Crowdsourcing is the ripple in the matrix that breaks that construct. It’s the only outlet where it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, or how long you’ve been doing it. All that matters is what you make, and I love that.
What do you like to do when you’re not creating video masterpieces?
When I’m not working on film stuff, I’m usually reading, playing video games, watching films, or exploring with friends. Also eating, I do that a lot for a skinny guy.
Where is home for you?
Currently I live in Atlanta, where I’ve been based for about three years. I love to travel, though, so it’s hard to say when that will change.
Where do/did you go to school? How has your education influenced your filmmaking?
I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a film degree three and a half years ago. It was a great experience, the school had some interesting programs, and above all I got to meet and work with people who raised my standards for myself.
What/where do you find inspiration for your films? Share a bit about your creative process.
Depending on whether I’m working on an ad or a narrative, my process is pretty different. For ads, I tend to go through a number of ideas with a group of creative peers or just on my own. Then I weed through them, let the ideas simmer a bit, and pick whatever seems to make the most sense. Narratives are a little different. Those are ideas that just seem to come on their own and develop over time. They seem to have a life and will of their own.
Which was your favorite Zooppa contest to participate in? Why?
So far my favorite Zooppa contest has probably been Mrs. Dash. It was one of my first contests, and despite being the most work, it allowed for the most playfulness and fun.
What are you currently working on (job, films)?
I’m currently in Japan working on directing a documentary about Cat Island. It’s an interesting little place with an incredibly rural culture, 44 old people, and a whole bunch of cats.
What are you hoping to achieve in the future?
The goal for the future is to be working entirely in narrative or interesting documentaries. World building, story telling, and exploring interesting characters. And also still to write books. That’s a goal that will probably never leave me.
