Meet this week’s featured members, the Garcia Brothers! These two started making films together at ages eight and four, and have worked hard to turn their shared hobby and passion into a career. The two started their own company, Ice Cream Entertainment, and have won many awards in various festivals across the country. Despite having only been participating in Zooppa projects or only six months, they recently won A Special Tree project with their video “The Time Capsule”.
Huge congratulations, and glad to have you both! Read the full interview below.
1. Tell us about yourself, personally and creatively.
My brother Nate and I have grown up making movies. I was 8 and he was 4 the
first time we picked up a camera and started creating. What started as a hobby
eventually turned into an obsession, and ultimately a career. We’ve built a
successful company, Ice Cream Entertainment, and have together won dozens of
awards in various contests and film festivals. We work together from our studio in
Boise, ID. I am married with 2 sons (Jonathan, 2 and Joshua, 5mo) and Nate is
married. Our wives also happen to be sisters for whatever that’s worth.
2. What brought you to the Zooppa community?
6 months ago Nate and I decided it was time to branch out. Commercial work was
the obvious direction but we didn’t have a clear sense of how to land bigger clients.
That’s when we discovered commercial contests through Zooppa and other websites
and we started to build our portfolio.
3. What do you like most about crowdsourced film contests?
Film contests are an amazing opportunity to have your work analyzed with a critical
eye. We’ve found no quicker way to grow as filmmakers and storytellers than to
create in a competitive environment. Either your work is rewarded or it’s not. When
you fail, you’re given a wonderful opportunity to sit back and ask yourself why
something didn’t work and how can you improve the next time around.
4. Name 3 films/directors that have influenced your work.
Steven Spielberg, the Coen brothers, and Mel Gibson.
5. Where do/did you go to school? How has your education influenced your filmmaking?
Nate and I both have 4 year theology degrees. Our background gives us a more
positive outlook on life which informs our work.
6. What is your favorite genre of film to create?
7. Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon?
At home watching a good movie.
8. Choose 5 words to describe your art.
Entertaining, positive, heartfelt, inspiring and unique.
9. What projects are you currently working on?
We are currently developing a feature film.
10. What drew you to participate in this campaign? i.e. – did the brief catch
your attention, the prize money, the love for the brand?
The Special Tree competition from Zooppa seemed to be a perfectly suited
opportunity for us. We live in the beautiful state of Idaho where we could have a
beautiful backdrop in under an hour’s drive. We also specialize in telling heartfelt
stories and we also have some great gear (Stabilizers, drone) that would allow us
to really capture the story the way we envisioned. While money is always a
consideration, and Zooppa contests are particularly generous with their awards, we
are always most concerned with telling a story we’re passionate about. The money
always, always follows suit.
11. What is one piece of advice you would give to your fellow Zooppa community members?
Be yourself. Seriously, that’s it.
12. 10 years from now where will we see you and your films?
10 years from now Nate and I hope to have our films in theaters across the world.
