Tell us about yourself, personally and creatively.
My name is Tyler Short, I’m 23 years old, and I’m currently working as an aspiring architect in the Pacific Northwest. In terms of filmmaking, I’m particularly interested in the integration of animation and humor, and merging animated characters with live-action situations.
What first interested you in film?
My first experience with making videos came from doing school assignments with my parent’s camcorder back in middle school. My friends and I would always end up using horrible low-budget practical effects, until one day I decided to pick up After Effects and start taking things seriously. The rest is history.
What drew you to the Zooppa community?
The caliber and uniqueness of the clients, the quality of content from the community. In addition, the Zooppa staff always seemed very involved with the community, providing answers to questions and engaging with filmmakers.
What do you like most about crowdsourced film contests?
It allows you to interact with and design for clients that you would never have the opportunity to otherwise. As an amateur individual filmmaker, it would be impossible to land a contract with large multi-national brands like Pepto Bismol and REDD’S, but with crowdsourcing, anything is possible.
What do you like to do when you’re not creating video masterpieces?
Work keeps me plenty busy, but when I’m not designing buildings or making videos, I love playing sports, being outdoors, and exploring the local culture.
Where is home for you?
I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, and after a brief five-year hiatus, I’ve returned there to begin my career. It’s a beautiful setting and an outstanding atmosphere for those in creative industries. Excellent food and beer as well.
Where do/did you go to school? How has your education influenced your filmmaking?
I attended the University of Oregon, studying architecture. My architectural background has provided me with a lot of the skills in digital tools that I utilize while making videos, as well as overall concepts of design and presentation.
What/where do you find inspiration for your films? Share a bit about your creative process.
I always start with what I think will make me laugh. I always try to push myself technically with every contest as well, and try to animate or visualize something that I’ve never tried before.
Which was your favorite Zooppa contest to participate in? Why?
Probably the Pepto Bismol piece. I got my entire family involved, setting up mock scenes of various holidays in the middle of July, all while I sat around on a toilet. Lots of laughs were had.
What are you currently working on (job, films)?
I’m extremely busy with my architectural career, and I’m always trying to push myself forward in that regard, so that definitely takes up the majority of my time. But I’m always on the lookout for intriguing filmmaking opportunities, should the timing allow.
What are you hoping to achieve in the future?
At this point, my only goal is to not become stagnant, and keep improving on everything I do.
